Developed in 2015, the Climate Fresk is a collaborative, three-hour workshop that helps teach audiences about climate change by having them solve an interactive puzzle as a group. The Fresk explains the fundamentals of climate change and uses only established, scientific facts to develop participants’ understanding of the subject, toward the goal of raising societal awareness and action on climate.

Globally, the Fresk has had over one million participants, including members of the Duke community. In February 2023, 18 Duke faculty, staff, and students participated in a Climate Fresk facilitator training sponsored with Duke Climate Commitment educational funds. These facilitators have conducted Fresks in their classes and school-based affinity groups, as well as in the Climate and Sustainability Teaching Fellows workshop and as part of the Duke Pre-College program in Summer 2023. As of October 2023, over 400 members of the Duke community have already participated in the Climate Fresk. Plans are underway for broadening the reach of the Climate Fresk to the Duke alumni population through both in-person and virtual workshop opportunities.
