Explore Our Focus Areas

Explore our areas of focus for the Duke Climate Commitment, as well as additional important themes that are woven and embedded in our work. Embedded in our work and focus areas are our pillars of education, research, sustainable operations, external engagement and community partnerships.

Climate and Oceans

The world’s oceans, vital for food, materials, recreation and business, are at risk due to overfishing, pollution and climate impacts. As humanity taps into the “blue economy,” ocean health is critical to address. Duke University has long been a leader in ocean and climate research, working to protect oceans while identifying their role in climate solutions. The Duke Marine Lab is central to this effort, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration across the university and state. Through additional partnerships locally to globally, Duke ensures that research and expertise are helping to influence decision-making to create a sustainable blue economy for all.

Climate and Health

Our climate impacts health, through the food systems, water, sanitation, worker safety, migration and disease patterns. Duke research is leading the way in identifying climate stresses on both health care and health outcomes, on new diseases and new patterns of old diseases, on individuals and populations, and on consequences on health disparities. Duke also is shaping professions and policies to meet these challenges. By fully integrating Duke’s first-class health system into the Climate Commitment’s education, research, engagement, operations, and community partnership strategies, we have an unprecedented opportunity to improve the health of our local community as well as people across the globe.

Climate Finance and Policy

A more resilient and innovative energy economy will require trillions – not billions – in annual global investment, according to the Energy Transitions Commission. Duke leads in climate finance and policy to create robust, efficient systems and economies that focus on stronger economies, energy independence and supportive business growth. Faculty are providing intellectual leadership for the decisions being made by firms, financiers, and governments driving key investments. Our research, educational programs and strong alumni network offer students tremendous opportunities to shape the future to a more sustainable, efficient economy and society.

Additional Areas of Focus Across Our Portfolio

It is essential to recognize that there are additional areas of focus that are highly valued and often interwoven in the three areas of focus above. These themes contribute significantly to our overall mission and are crucial for their potential to create meaningful impacts in the future. These additional themes represent university strengths, partnerships and values that are important to us.

Science and Technology

Duke’s robust expertise in data science, mathematics, statistics, artificial intelligence and machine learning are enabling the development of data-driven climate programs and projects with impact. With examples like Climate+, Duke is training future leaders how to solve complex climate problems through data science methods and interdisciplinary thinking – areas of strength resulting in innovation.

Community Resilience

Building the most resilient societies that protect our people, communities and institutions, requires strong leadership and a long term commitment across all stakeholders. Duke works to build resilience in the natural and human environments, founded on decades of research and with partnerships for dynamic, collaborative work to support community resilience in Durham, North Carolina and beyond.

Environmental Justice

Duke’s environmental and climate justice work focuses on understanding and addressing the more equitable distribution of mitigation and adaptation opportunities and burdens in the university’s climate efforts. Drawing from the region’s deep history in the environmental justice movement, the Climate Commitment is building on environmental justice partnerships across the university and beyond.

Community Partnerships

In community partnership, Duke is committed to co-creating a better world to work and live. We are committed to purposeful partnerships—particularly in Durham, our region, and across North Carolina—grounded in an understanding of community needs. We seek to build and grow positive communities with less pollution, reduced traffic delays, energy efficiency and sustainable benefits.
