In March 2023, Sustainable Duke hired an assistant director to support the development of a robust Sustainability and Climate Applied Learning (SCALe) program (previously referred to as the Campus as Lab program) to engage students, staff, faculty and community partners in hands-on educational experiences. Through courses and special projects outside of the classroom, lessons are rooted in real-world context and use Duke’s campus as a living learning laboratory, allowing active exploration, design and implementation of local climate and sustainability solutions at the intersections of academics, social and physical campus activity, and community engagement.

Funding will be available to students, staff and faculty in the coming months to support projects and activities that have the potential to position Duke to address real climate challenges through education, service, research, and campus operations as they relate to where we study, work, play and live.
