From April to October 2023, the Rubenstein Library ran an exhibit in its Photography Gallery of the early coal-mining photographs of Earl Dotter, who has spent his career documenting people who labor in hazardous conditions. Duke Libraries acquired Dotter’s photographic archive in 2022. The photos provide vivid documentation of the environmental and human toll that a fossil fuel economy entails. Dotter visited Duke in September 2023 to talk about the exhibit and his life’s work as a documentary photographer.
