In the spring of 2023, Duke hired a consultant to perform a feasibility study of University Environmental Service’s (UEVS) waste diversion and recycling programs, infrastructure and staffing. The consultant’s goals included making recommendations for how best to structure a program for increased waste diversion. The study provided a thorough audit of waste diversion operations and the related staffing/labor as well as included meeting with key campus stakeholders. The study offers key findings and recommendations that could potentially be implemented —pending a cost-benefit analysis yet to be completed in the areas of staffing, waste diversion planning, composting, education and engagement.
